Sony makes some of the best headphones on the market, and the WH-1000XM5 is the best of them. Stylish, comfortable, and packed with tons of great features, the XM5 is undoubtedly amazing—but I think they’re not perfect.

Some headphones, like the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro, even come with removable Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones Battery and dedicated charging ports built into the audio receiver. I doubt Sony will go this route with its upcoming XM6 headphones, but it’s an interesting choice—especially given the leaked patent application for removable ear cups. Personally, I’d prefer Sony to go the route most of the best wireless headphones have taken, like the Nothing Ear, which can be simply placed on a wireless charging pad and completely forgotten about. But Sony could also take a more sophisticated approach and utilize a wireless charging pad with a precise placement on one of the ear cups. This is best exemplified by the Marshal Major V headphones, which can be wirelessly charged on a Qi-enabledSony WH-1000XM5 Headphones Battery

charging pad.

If Sony chooses to go that route, the XM6 should also try to copy the Major V’s battery protection mode, which, as we said in our review, “extends playback time by limiting charging speed (to no more than 90%), thereby extending the life of the WH-1000XM5 headphone battery”. Convenience is key. I love my Sony XM5 headphones, but (call me lazy if you will) I’ve grown tired of having to remember to plug them in when theWH-1000XM5 headphone batteryis running low. I often forget that I hear the dreaded “low battery” alarm, calm and indifferent, when I’m at the gym or halfway to the office. Ten minutes later, it’s dead. I imagine I’m not the only one who says I’ve grown tired of constantly fiddling with wires and chargers. After all, it’s 2025, shouldn’t these things be gone by now? I know this isn’t common among on-ear headphones, but Sony’s WF-1000XM5 headphones have wireless charging, so it’s nothing new for the brand. It’s hard to guess exactly how it will accomplish this, but I wouldn’t be opposed to buying a separate charging dock or Qi pad for the sake of convenience.

It’s a big ask, but in a crowded market, Sony’s top-tier headphones will need to take advantage of every possible advantage to stay ahead.
