Galaxy Watch 5 Pro vs Apple Watch 8 Pro: Which rugged smartwatch will win?

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, which debuted at Samsung’s Unpacked event in August, is, as rumored, a ruggedized version of the Galaxy Watch 5, which fits nicely with the long-rumored Apple Watch Series 8 Pro. While the Pro seems like the most likely option, it could also be the Apple Watch Max, Sports, Extreme or Explorer edition.

Galaxy Watch 5 Pro vs Apple Watch 8 Pro: How Tough Are They?
Compared to the aluminum in the standard Galaxy Watch 5, the titanium chassis is the biggest upgrade. Both models feature a sapphire crystal display this year, which Samsung claims is 60 percent stronger than the previous Galaxy Watch display. Finally, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has slightly raised bezels to better protect the display from bumps and scratches.

Titanium led the Apple Watch Series 8 Pro speculation, with Mark Gurman providing the most detailed description in a July 10 Bloomberg Newsletter. It features “a heavier, stronger case made of high-quality non-aluminum metal material,” he said, “probably titanium.” That’s a logical conclusion, although given that Apple already makes titanium Apple Watches, unless Apple discontinues the titanium case option for the standard Apple Watch 8, it will have to make a more explicit break with the standard model’s design to stand out . Apple has also used sapphire crystal displays on stainless steel and titanium Apple Watch models, so it’s unclear how or if it will add that feature.

So based on what we know so far, the two watches should be roughly the same in durability, with the wildcard being how much Apple tweaks the actual design of the Apple Watch 8 Pro compared to its familiar design.

Galaxy Watch 5 Pro vs Apple Watch 8 Pro: What else makes them “professional”?
The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro features the same 1.4-inch circular display as the 44mm Galaxy Watch 5, but it measures 45.4mm and weighs 46.5g, which is significantly higher than 33.5g. That weight is largely due to the 590mAh battery inside the 5 Pro, compared to just 410mAh in the Watch 5. Samsung claims this will allow the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to last up to 80 hours on a single charge. The extra battery life is critical for the extensive GPS usage expected by Galaxy Watch 5 Pro users who may rely on Google Maps on the watch for directions outside of activity tracking for long bike rides or runs.

The Apple Watch Series 8 Pro is also rumored to have a larger 50mm bezel, up from 45mm on the current largest model. However, the Apple Watch may be a better case for a larger chassis and larger display to match 1.99 inches. The battery life claim is less certain, with rumors suggesting it will outlast the current Apple Watch Series 7. Given the projected size increase, it shouldn’t be difficult for Apple to fit a bigger battery, since Apple has been stuck with charging the Apple Watch for a few hours for over 18 years, and now it has a way to match the Watch 5 Pro.

Now that both Wear OS and watchOS exclude their respective iOS or Android operating systems from support, you need to choose the entire mobile ecosystem instead of being able to choose your favorite phone and smartwatch.

Based on what we know about the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and the most credible rumors about the Apple Watch Series 8 Pro, overall features and durability should be very close, while prices should drop significantly in Samsung’s favor.

Opting to pair the new $1,799 Galaxy Z Fold 4 with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is more expensive than anything but the top forecast for the Apple Watch Series 8 Pro and the top spec for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Samsung phones, including the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Watch 5 Pro, will be hundreds of dollars off the price.
