Amazon Fire HD 10 review: The cheapest tablet with amazing battery life

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) is an already good tablet with incremental upgrades like a slightly brighter screen, 1GB more RAM, and a smaller, lighter design. While it may not be a must-have for anyone shopping for a 2019 tablet, it certainly shows that Amazon is capable of delivering a value-driven tablet that’s good enough for many people.

This makes the Fire HD 10 one of the best Android tablets on the market, and one of the best you can buy—especially if you’re on a budget, as it’s one of the best cheap tablets on the market. Its biggest flaws aren’t anything new, though. Amazon’s Fire OS is still lacking apps, lacking the Google Play app store. That means you don’t get the full YouTube experience, among other things.

As usual, Amazon is also selling a $199 Fire HD 10 Kids Edition, and the extra $50 gets you a 2-year unconditional warranty, a case with a kickstand, and a year of Amazon Kids+ (aka FreeTime Unlimited).

This year, Amazon is offering a few new optional upgrades: a $179 Fire HD 10 (2021) Plus with wireless charging and 4GB of RAM (up from 3GB in the entry-level model), and a $299 (currently $249) Fire HD 10 Plus Productivity Bundle that includes a detachable Bluetooth keyboard case and 12 months of Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: Design

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) tablet has a very minimalist design, with a matte plastic shell on one side and a glossy screen on the other. It’s available in black, denim (the dark blue shown here), lavender, and olive.

While testing the Fire HD 10 at home, I can say it feels sturdy unless you grip it too tightly. Then you’ll notice that the case is a bit curved — mostly in the center of the back. The Fire HD 10 Plus (9.7 x 6.5 x 0.4 inches, 16.5 ounces) is a bit heavier, while the Apple iPad (2020) (9.8 x 6.8 x 0.3 inches, 17.6 ounces) is slightly thinner and heavier.

The Fire HD 10 (2021) takes a step over the iPad with its USB-C port, which still uses a Lightning port. While both are reversible, Apple’s port is far from universal, while USB-C is growing in popularity.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: display

For a $150 tablet, the Fire HD 10’s display is colorful and bright. Additionally, this is Amazon’s only tablet with a full HD (1,920-by-1,200-pixel) screen, so if screen quality is important to you, don’t consider the Fire HD 8 or Fire 7.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review The Fire HD 10’s display appears to be slightly better than the 2019 model, producing 106.5% of the sRGB spectrum on our Klein K10-A colorimeter and emitting up to 420 nits of brightness.

That’s a bit brighter than the 2019 Fire HD 10 (106%, 403 nits) and Fire HD 10 Plus (107.9%, 403.6 nits). The 2020 iPad 8th Gen (97%, 484 nits) is slightly less colorful but brighter. The Fire HD 10’s display can be a little reflective (a problem with most tablets), but it doesn’t affect viewing angles. As I watched an airstrike drop more bombs in The Tomorrow War, the explosions only dimmed slightly when viewed from 45 degrees to the left or right.

The Amazon Fire HD 10’s touchscreen has improved in speed since I tested the 2019 model. Not only was navigating the Fire OS home screen as snappy as ever, but I didn’t see any lag when I pinched and pulled to zoom in and out of photos.

I also wish the Fire HD 10’s panel woke up when I tapped it. Alas, you need to tap the power button to turn the panel on.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: Audio

The 2021 Fire HD 10’s screen may be impressive at this price, but its speakers don’t always match it. When I turned on Frank Ocean’s “Swim Good,” I immediately heard too much of the rattling percussion because the sound was a little too shrill from the tablet’s speakers. I did enjoy the tinkling of piano keys while listening to LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends,” though. I got almost none when searching for bass in De La Soul’s “Rock Co. Kane Flow,” though MF Doom’s vocals did sound correct and firm.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: Performance

The 2021 Fire HD 10 is faster than the smaller Fire tablet, with an octa-core 2.0 GHz processor and 3GB of RAM, but still not blazingly fast. Simple pauses when moving from an app to the home screen, for example, took a little longer than they should, and I saw similar lags when opening app switch views. Navigating tabs in the Silk browser was a little smoother than before, thanks to the extra 1GB of RAM (the 2019 model only had 2GB).

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review

As far as games go, Asphalt 9’s racing game only looks great in the opening sequence, when the cars aren’t actually moving. As I zipped down the street in a blue Mitsubishi, I noticed small but noticeable stutters while colliding with other cars and performing stunts on ramps.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) Review: Amazon Fire HD 10 Battery Life

Reliable is the big word when it comes to  Tablet Battery Amazon Kindle life, so I’m impressed when I say the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) lasts a while on a single charge.

The Tom’s Guide  Amazon Fire HD 10 Battery Test (surfing the web over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness) showed the Fire HD 10 lasting 13 hours, 14 minutes with default settings, and 13 hours, 46 minutes with Amazon’s automatic low-power mode engaged after the Amazon Fire HD 10 Battery  reached 20 percent. The latter time was a minute longer than the 2019 model’s 13:45.

Both of those times are longer than the iPad 2020 (12:57), but the Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus lasted longer: 14:02 by default, and 14:35 with Auto Low Power Mode enabled.

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: Camera

The camera in the Fire HD 10 (2021) will prove to be serviceable, but not ideal for taking great photos.

The new Fire HD 10’s rear camera gets a 5-megapixel sensor, up from the previous generation’s 2-megapixel sensor. Still, my shots of houseplants and toys were a little blurry no matter how hard I tried to use tap to focus. Tones looked OK, with the blue of a green cactus and a small acid-wash denim jacket looking good. Amazon Fire HD 10 (2021) review: Conclusion

The Fire HD 10 is still a pretty competent tablet. As this Fire HD 10 (2021) review shows, it has a bright, clear display and excellent Tablet Battery Amazon Fire HD 10 Kindleylife (plus, it can be charged using the same cable as your laptop or phone).

Analyzing multiple layers of content distributed by Amazon, I found the Fire HD 10 2021 to be fast enough for most everyday tasks. The Fire HD 10 quickly loaded music from Spotify and movies from Prime Video.

Still, the Fire HD 10’s score of 969 on the Geekbench 5 multi-core performance benchmark isn’t impressive. The A12 Bionic chip in the iPad earns it a higher score of 2,685, while the 4GB of RAM in the Fire HD 10 Plus (an eight-core 2.0 GHz CPU, no less) makes a huge difference to its 1,399 score. This is arguably the best Amazon tablet ever. That said, the Fire HD 10 (2021) is still a great choice for those looking for a device for casual browsing the internet, reading ebooks, and watching videos. It’s just a matter of how far you want to push it
