What you need to know about what’s new in the Windows 11 22H2 update

Windows 11 got its first major update in 22H2, codenamed “Sun Valley 2” during development. In Windows 11, Microsoft has moved away from Windows 10’s crazy twice-yearly schedule by moving to a yearly cycle of releasing major updates.

what you need to know
This update is named 22H2 because it will be released in the second half of 2022. Specifically, it hits Microsoft’s Release Preview channel on June 7, 2022. That means the update could roll out sometime in the summer of 2022.

A free update will be provided through Windows Update when it becomes available. You’ll see this as an option in Settings > Windows Update at the top of the window.

If you want to update early, you can always join the Windows Insider Program’s Release Preview channel on your PC. However, if you install the update before everything is ready, you increase the chance of encountering errors. Check out the new features below!

new task manager
Windows 11 now has an updated, modern task manager and some new features. As always, you can open it by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc, right-clicking the Start button and selecting Task Manager, launching Task Manager from the Start menu, or pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then Click Task Manager to open it.

The Task Manager interface now looks more friendly on Windows 11. It’s similar to how Microsoft handles Notepad updates: all the standard features are still there. However, the interface has been modernized and the shading of the resource usage column on the Processes tab uses the accent color of your choice.

taskbar drag and drop
A hugely missing feature is back: you can now drag and drop files, images, and other content onto taskbar icons. This is an important feature loved by many Windows users in Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows.

Now, it’s back, and mostly works as you’d expect. However, when you drag something to the tray icon, you’ll still see a circle with a line, which means you can’t drag and drop. However, when you drag to an app icon, Windows 11 will switch to the relevant window, which you can drag and drop directly onto as usual.

Start menu improvements
Folders for application shortcuts will return to the Start menu in the 22H2 update. It works just like on mobile platforms like iPhone, iPad and Android.

In the “pinned” area of the start menu, simply drag and drop one app’s icon over another app’s icon. You will get a folder with two icons. You can click a folder to open it, give it any name you like, and drag other icons onto it to add it to the folder.

You can now also choose a different layout for the Start menu from Settings > Personalization > Start, choose to see more pinned apps or more auto-suggested items.

Live subtitles for any audio
Windows 11 now features Live Captions (just like on Android.) When enabled, Windows will automatically display captions for any audio you listen to on your PC, whether it’s a voice call you’re participating in, or you’re watching online video or any other content. Audio is transcribed locally on your PC rather than uploaded to the cloud.

To enable it, search the Start menu for “Live Captions” or click the Quick Settings menu button to the left of the taskbar clock, click the Accessibility button in the Quick Settings menu, and turn on ” Live Captioning”. “
