Of all the new gaming laptops launching this year, the 2021 Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 is almost certain to be one of the most powerful, high-spec machines you can buy. Its top specs not only feature a full 16GB variant of Nvidia’s new RTX 3080 graphics chip and an overclocked model of AMD’s new Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU, but also a 165Hz refresh rate display with a gorgeous 2560×1440 resolution. It’s a truly beautiful machine, and can easily replace your entire desktop – assuming you have the funds to buy it , of course. Of course, the Scar 15 isn’t the first 2560×1440 gaming laptop ever, but it might be one of the first with the hardware to really take advantage of it.
The combination of AMD’s top-of-the-line Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, 32GB of RAM, and the 16GB variant of Nvidia’s flagship RTX 3080 graphics chip is enough to play the latest blockbuster games smoothly at maximum quality settings at 1440p, and even into the 80 zone when you lower the resolution At 1080p, 90 or even 100 fps can be achieved. Meanwhile, less demanding online shooters and 2D indie games can easily handle a 165Hz refresh rate at either resolution. All in all, this is a very respectable set of benchmark figures, with perhaps the exception of Cyberpunk 2077 – although even here we’re only really talking about its 1440p performance and not anything else. Personally, gaming at 1080p on this particular model of the Scar 15 still looks great, and I’d rather opt to bump it up to 2560×1440 when possible rather than limit myself to 1080p all the time.As for the Scar 15’s CPU performance, AMD’s Ryzen 9 5900HX and its accompanying 32GB of RAM definitely stand the test of time. As you’d expect from a new top-tier processor, its Cinebench R20 scores are better than any other processor I’ ve seen to date, with a single-core score of 570 and a multi-core score of 4935. To put those numbers into context, the former is 17% faster than Intel’s current flagship CPUs, such as the Core i7-10875H in the Lenovo Legion 7i, while the latter is 33% faster. So, this should be plenty of speed for gaming and media creation tasks, and should serve you very well for years to come. Overall, there’s a lot to like about the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15. Sure, it’s expensive, but it definitely has great performance to back it up. Compared to the £2200/$2240 price of my previous favorite gaming laptop, the Lenovo Legion 7i,
the Scar 15 has a lot more going for it, with a higher refresh rate display, significantly better 1080p performance, and better gaming performance at 1440p. options. You go too. It also has a great keyboard and plenty of ports, all packaged into a rather cute-looking chassis. If I were in the market for a desktop replacement laptop, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533Q would definitely be high on my list
