I used a Huawei Matebook D 16 (2024) as a work laptop for 6 weeks. The part is rather unobtrusive, but that’s a good thing in this case. This is our test. Strikingly, there are also Huawei laptops. For example, while Huawei has been subject to a US smartphone and tablet trade embargo since 2019 and is not allowed to sell officially licensed Android smartphones from Google, China brings new laptops to the West every year — including Intel processors and Windows. We tested a 2019 Matebook 13 and a 2020 Matebook D14. Why does this work? Well, the US government has given Intel and Microsoft exemptions for their deals with Huawei — for reasons that are unclear. But we can definitely be happy about it because the Huawei Matebook is a solid workhorse.In everyday life, everything went smoothly and the battery held up well – after four hours of train travel, light typing, and reduced screen brightness, theHuawei Matebook D 16’s battery remained at 60%. It’s certainly not on par with current MacBooks, but it’s good enough for my applications. The included power adapter quickly charges up to 65 watts, and thanks to USB-C it can be used with smartphones and other devices, even while gaming on a Matebook. It’s not a particularly demanding game, but GTA V and other older games run with less detail. Note that this applies to the i9 version we tested. I can’t say anything about the i5 version. You can hear the fan noise while playing games, but it’s not too loud. Speaking of which: the stereo speakers sound a bit thin and lack bass.
Windows 11 comes pre-installed on the Matebook 16, anything else would be surprising. If you configure it as “healthy” then it is a running operating system. Huawei also installs a lot of software in its so-called PC Manager. I quickly closed some of them, like the clipboard manager SuperHub, because it kept popping up when I moved the mouse arrow to the top of the screen.Matebook 16 ConclusionA good laptop for work doesn’t necessarily have to have RGB effects or any other eye-catching design. It must be portable and practical. This definitely applies to the Huawei Matebook D 16 (2024). Handling, portability, display and operation are showcased here.
