One of the best features of the iPhone in recent years has arguably been its optimized  Apple Watch Battery<\/a><\/u><\/strong> charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First introduced a year ago with iOS 13, the “Optimize Battery Charging” feature aimed to reduce battery degradation and thus extend Apple Watch watchOS 7 Battery<\/a><\/strong> life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feature limited the time your iPhone remained fully charged by pausing the charging process when it reached 80%, then used on-device machine learning to learn your daily charging habits and determine when to add the remaining 20% \u200b\u200bso your iPhone was ready when you woke up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple subsequently added the same feature to macOS Catalina 10.15.5. Based on my testing, this feature does indeed reduce battery wear, and machine learning quickly learns your habits, allowing it to run in the background without disrupting your schedule when things change. You can check if you have this feature and if it’s turned on by doing the following on your Apple Watch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settings > Apple Watch Battery<\/a><\/u><\/strong> > Battery Health<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Optimized Charging is designed to only turn on when you’re where you spend most of your time, such as at home and the office, to charge your Apple Watch battery. It’s smart enough to automatically turn off when you change these routines, such as when you’re traveling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Optimized Charging to work properly, you must enable the following settings on your Apple Watch (which are enabled by default):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Location Services<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > System Customization<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations > Significant LocationsApple Watch watchOS 7 Battery<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All set up, but how does this information help you determine if your Apple Watch battery is aging? Go back to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. You’ll see a “Maximum Capacity” value. If it’s above 80%, the battery is in good condition. Below 80%, there may be a problem with the battery, and you’ll also notice thatApple Watch watchOS 7 Battery<\/a><\/strong>has less battery life than before.You don’t need to take your watch off your wrist to do this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
