Design: Midsize, classic Canon style<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of size, the EOS R5 Mark II is in line with most other full-frame cameras. The body measures 3.9 by 5.5 by 3.5 inches (HWD) and weighs about 1.5 pounds without a lens. That’s similar to Sony’s 60MP a7R V (3.8 by 5.2 by 3.2 inches, 1.6 pounds) and slightly smaller than the Nikon Z 8 (4.7 by 5.7 by 3.3 inches, 2 pounds) The R5 II (and other EOS R-series bodies) are mirrorless designs, meaning they omit the auto-return mirror and optical viewfinder that are typical of SLRs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EVF displays an image that’s quite large, with a magnification of 0.76x when used with a 50mm lens and focused to infinity. It displays crisp, sharp details thanks to 5.8 million dots, and has stable, smooth motion with a choice of 60 or 120fps refresh rates. The 60fps option consumes less power, but will prevent you from enjoying blackout-free shooting (at 60fps, the live view screen goes dark as the camera captures an image, while the 120fps option flashes a white border around the edge of the viewfinder to let you know the camera has captured a photo). Blackout-free shooting is only available in electronic shutter mode. If you’re using an older Canon EOS R5 Mark II camera battery<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, the camera will display a warning message at power-up letting you know that video, network, and accessory compatibility are limited. I think the warning is useful, but wish there was a way to suppress it — a “don’t show this message again” checkbox or menu option would certainly be welcome. This reminder screen can cause you to miss quick, candid moments, which is almost unacceptable on a pro camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the body’s design mimics that of a SLR, and it’s heavily inspired by Canon’s discontinued EOS 5D series (the Mark IV was the final entry), with similar ergonomics and an electronic viewfinder behind the lens. The camera is finished in black — Canon doesn’t usually offer classic silver or eye-catching color schemes, and this time is no exception. Its chassis is made of magnesium alloy, with a mix of metal, leatherette, and polycarbonate on the exterior. Weather sealing, an expected feature at this level, is also included. The R5 Mark II is dust and splash resistant, so you can use it outdoors and in the field with confidence, although it’s equally good in the studio. Meanwhile, the M-Fn, record, and LCD backlight buttons are in the same place as before, as is the top display, a monochrome OLED that shows exposure settings, Canon EOS R5 Mark II camera battery<\/a><\/u><\/strong> life, and other miscellaneous information. The R5 II uses a Mode button to switch between Aperture, Shutter, Program and Manual shooting, and it’s in the same place as the R5, in the center of the Quick Control dial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
