Here are 10 predictions for the world of artificial intelligence (AI<\/strong>) in 2025, from technology to business to policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. AI will automatically \u201ccreate betterAI<\/strong> and make great progress<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recursively self-improving AI has been a recurring theme in the AI \u200b\u200bcommunity for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s define a superintelligent machine as a machine that can far surpass even the most talented human intellectual activity. Since designing machines is an intellectual activity, superintelligent machines can design better machines, and then there will be an \u201cintelligence explosion,\u201d and \u201chuman intelligence will be left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the idea of \u200b\u200bAI inventing better AI is theoretically appealing, it still has a sci-fi feel. However, progress towards this vision is starting to come to fruition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 2025, we predict that the direction of \u201cAI<\/strong>researching AI\u201d will suddenly become mainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most striking examples is Sakana AI\u2019s \u201cAI Scientists.\u201d This study, published in August 2024, is an interesting experimental result that shows that AI systems can perform the entire process of AI research completely autonomously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI scientists read existing literature, come up with new research ideas, design and perform experiments to test them, compile the results into research papers, and then conduct the peer review process on their own. This can all be done without human help. Some papers written by AI<\/strong> scientists are public and can be viewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are rumors that OpenAI and Anthropic are also working on projects to create “autonomous AI researchers”, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 2025, these efforts will have made a big leap forward, and startups may enter the market one after another. This year will be the year when it is widely recognized that automation of AI research using AI has become a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly symbolic event is the possibility that “a paper written solely by an AI agent will be accepted by a top AI academic group.” Since peer review at academic conferences is conducted anonymously, it is very likely that after the paper is accepted, it will be clear that it was written by an AI<\/strong> It would not be surprising to see historical examples appear at major academic conferences such as NeurIPS, CVPR, and ICML.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
